I finally got around to making a Google XML Sitemap.
When I first looked over the information at Google on
how to make the XML sitemap, I found the software to
create an .xml file confusing and didn't go any further.
A Google XML Sitemap is a file you create that holds
a master list of all your site's pages. This helps your
pages get indexed in Google much quicker. You can
always update your Google XML sitemap as you add
new content or update previous pages. So it sure seems
like a good idea to create a XML Sitemap and submit
it to Google. http://google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/
The other day I found a free sitemap software program
that was easy to use. "VIGOS GSitemap" you can get
it at:
http://www.vigos.com/products/gsitemap/
This software program is still in Beta so there is no help
files nor support. But it's quite straightforward. The
problem I found with it was when you use the "Web
Spider" to crawl your site and list the URLs. Sometimes
it will put the pages from a sub-directory into your root
URL.
If you use the "Web Spider" you will have to look over
the list of URLs it brings up and delete out those that
are not correct.
To get the correct URLs for your sub-directories, click
on the "Directories" tab and put in the URL, then click
on the "Web Spider" and put in the URL to the directory.
It will then get the correct paths and put them in the
"URLs" tab.
Here is something else to be careful of. Do not save
your XML sitemap until you have clicked on "Generate"
on the toolbar. You have to generate an XML file before
you save it. Otherwise it will still be saved as an .xml but
it will only have saved the URLs list. It will not be in the
correct format, which is an XML file. Then you will not
be able to open your sitemap.xml file again and you will
have to start over.
If you have a small site, you can simply add new URLs
by typing them in yourself instead of using the "Web
Spider". I had hundreds of pages so the "Web Spider"
was the best time-saving choice for me.
Submitting your XML sitemap to Google is quite
straightforward. First you must upload it to your server,
then login to Google Sitemaps. If you haven't created
an account at Google, you must do that first.
When you add your site, Google will ask you to verify
it. You can do that by inserting a small piece of code,
that Google gives you, into the top of your main web
page before the last "head" tag. Then up load your
main page again.
Now you are ready to submit your XML sitemap to
Google.
Click on "Submit a Sitemap". Choose "Add General Web
Sitemap". Fill in the URL to your sitemap and that's all
there is to it.
You can go back to your Google account at any time and
check on the status of your site and sitemap. If there were
errors in your sitemap, Google will let you know and tell
you how to correct them.
You will get a lot of information about your site in your
Google Sitemap account. You can get Google's view of
your website, and diagnose potential problems. You can
see how Google crawls and indexes your site and learn
about specific problems they are having accessing it. You
can also learn which search terms drive traffic to your site,
and see exactly how users arrive there.
