How Much Do You Know About Computers?

If you have had your computer for awhile chances are that you have learned some tips on how to fix certain minor problems that come up now and then. But when something does go wrong that you haven't encountered before, it can be very frustrating to have to waste hours or days trying to find the problem.

It happens to everyone at some time. Just because I have had a computer for nine years, my family and friends think that when something goes wrong with their computers, that I should know how to fix it. The Perfect Classified Ad

caught my eye because this is what I have been doing
and it does work.

very long time in the Free Classifieds and it still brings
the responses. So there is no sense in trying to improve
it.

Ever notice a classified ad that appears over and over, week
after week? It is somebody's Perfect Classified Ad. It may
not be a literary thing of beauty, or even an ad that is very
appealing--but for some reason it gets sales for its owner.
Getting your Perfect Classified Ad will come easier if you
follow a simple plan.

Write your ad in complete sentences. Then cut out non-
essential words to make your ad the required length. Start
sentences with action words. Use short phrases.

While you are at it, write several versions of your classified
ad. I usually try to knock out six at a time.

Next, test your ads. Run them all on free ad sites, in ezines,
newspapers, or magazines. Be sure to include a code in
your response info so you will know which ad produced the
inquiry or sale.

Once you find an ad that works well, leave it alone. Resist
the temptation to tweak an ad that is already successful.
Don't worry if you or your associates become bored with
the ad. Your audience is not as close to the ad and is
only assured by its repetition.

Some sites are perfect for the Christmas season - their products fit easily into the idea of gift-giving. But what if the products and services you offer are for small business owners?

Or, as many of my clients ask, how do I survive the holiday season if I sell intangibles?

When a couple of people brought this question up to me in early fall, my answer was that I'd probably make enough money in October not to have to worry about November and December at all. Prevention made sense to me at the time as being the best cure, but it also doesn't mean that I've resigned myself to slow sales during the holidays.

On the contrary, I think that most people who have businesses that offer intangibles such as ebooks, downloadable software, or marketing services can just as much, or more money as the rest of the year by changing tactics slightly.

In other words, just because much of the world is more focused elsewhere doesn’t automatically mean that there is a smaller pool of available customers.

True, part-time small business owners may be more mindful of gift-giving and planning family gatherings right now, and anyone with family may sacrifice a new widget for themselves to get that special someone the gift of their dreams.

However, it’s important to remember that this doesn’t mean no one wants or needs your services right now. It may just mean that you need to think a little differently to make sales this time of year. There's a number of ways that a few subtle changes in your thinking can bring you into a solution-oriented perspective.

With the coming of the holidays, many home based entrepreneurs Holiday Lethargy are getting caught up in the spirit of the season. Instead of approaching their business with the same vigor and vitality as usual, they have dropped their guard a bit, and think they can coast through the end of the year. They might figure they've got to buy presents for family and friends, and funds will be a little short. After all they reason, everyone is doing this and December and January will be slow anyway.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Now is the time to double, and maybe even redouble your efforts! The people who feel they can renew their advertising efforts after the first of the year, will miss this boat.

Your plan at this point should be to aggressively advertise your business. Think about it. Many people will be short of funds, or overextended due to the holiday gifting, and won't be standing in line during the next few weeks to take advantage of your opportunity. But, we all know it takes between 5 and 7 exposures to get someone's attention. While the ads may not pay big dividends in December, you will be reinforcing your branding with your potential clients.

Take a lesson from the "brick and mortar" establishments. They will be pounding us with their ads now more than ever, trying to get their share of our holiday shopping dollars. And they will continue this until well in January realizing that some people have more expendable income after the holidays than before.

But, how about all those people getting first time computers? Don't forget that the Internet doesn't take a holiday. There are thousands of prospects going online everyday. If you relax now, you may be missing those prospects that you might otherwise get.

If you are in an affiliate program or in multi-level marketing, now is the ideal time to make yourself known. Many of these programs allow participation with little or no up front expenditure. If yours is one, feature this in your ads.

The design of your ads is critical at this time of the year. The question you should pose is not "can you afford it now, but can you afford not to".

The concept of advertising is sometimes difficult for people to understand, especially by those involved for the first time. The most important time to advertise is when business is slow. The pre-holiday season will be slow if you market an online opportunity. Now, many people will not realize this and curtail their activities. The smart ones will and increase their ad expenditures. They will get the "lion's share" of the business available.

Some people will receive money as a holiday gift, and now is the time to get their attention. The winner of this race will be the first person they think of when the funds become available. PC's currently exist in the majority of U.S. homes, and the number of first time users increases everyday. PC makers are trying to boost sales by cutting prices, leading to a major price war. While this is bad for the PC makers, it is good for those in business on the net as the number of new people coming on, who are your prospects, always increases when this happens.

Two-way satellite service is now a viable broadband alternative to cable modem and DSL service. The satellite is likely to appeal to consumers who want high-speed Internet access, but who either face long waits trying to obtain cable modem or DSL access, or live in a rural area where it is not available. This will also increase the number of people coming online.

If you are in business on the web, or planning to do so, now just might be the time to take advantage of the lethargy that others will face. The "Holidays" are not the time to slow down or discontinue your marketing efforts.

Links Management

I spent the last couple days setting up my new links directory. Sometimes things don't go as smoothly as you think they will!

I downloaded a copy of Duncan Carver's Link Management Assistant which is free. Thank you very much Duncan!

It wasn't that the instructions or the program was difficult to install, I just had to learn some new stuff, such as MySQL. It wasn't installed on my domain so I had to contact my web host to find out more about it.

They got back to me almost immediately, and said that I would have to upgrade as MySQL didn't come with the package I was paying for. But, it was only an extra $2 per quarter (I pay for my hosting every three months), plus I got more Disk Space and Bandwidth. That was not bad at all!

Once the MySQL was set up, I installed the links management program. Installation went OK, but I ran into some problems with setting up my templates. I was going to ask for help in the forum as a last resort. I like trying to figure things out myself before I ask for help. I couldn't get it working right so I re-installed the program and that fixed the problem.

So then I tested the program by adding a link. The program was supposed to send me an email to let me know that there was a link added that needed to be approved. I never received the email. I tried over and over adding links but no emails ever came. I thought I was going to have to break down and ask for help in the forum.

But then it occurred to me that perhaps my ISP's spam filter was blocking the emails from the links management program. So I set up a mailbox on my domain to use for the links directory. Sure enough, the emails came through immediately.

My old links directory is quite full of links, all supposedly reciprocated. I thought I would move them to the new directory so I started added them through the Linking Assistant. It would check for the reciprocal link to my site. I got many "no link was found" notices. So I went to the site myself to double check and sure enough they did not have my link on their site, so I removed their's.

Moving all the links from my old directory to the new one was too time consuming so I decided to just leave the old directory in place and direct new link exchange requests to the new directory.

The Links Management Assistant does have a way to add links from your old directory, but I didn't quite understand how to do and didn't want to bother with it anymore. I'll save that for another day.

Overall, the program works great and will save you a lot of time and hopefully get you a better listing in the search engines.
